Hello Good Ole Volks,
The first thing that I would like to do is to apologize for missing the
Break The Record Night event. It just so happened that my Squareback was
still in the shop at the time and I didn't think it would be proper to
show up at this great event without a VW. I was there with you in spirit
and y'all done a great job this year.....119 VW's at a Thursday
gathering....wow!
Well....I did finally get my Squareback out of the shop and I have been
enjoying driving it in this cooler weather lately, just like I'm sure a
lot of you guy's are. This is the time of year when it's great to be out
and about in a VW. I'm glad that Jack sent out that memo about the VW
Cruise In in Collinsville, VA. I had been busy all day on Saturday,
doing a little of this and a lot of that, and I told Susan that I wanted
to go to this event and let my Squareback have a nice run, Since Susan
was having a situation at the time, she couldn't make it, but encouraged
me to go on without her and enjoy myself. So....what did I do?
I went to the BP station, filled my Squareback up with some premium gas,
opened me up a Diet Pepsi, and headed out Hwy.58 West towards
Collinsville, VA. It was such a great feeling to be heading down the
highway in my VW. It wasn't even a hour to get there.....the Squareback
was running great, and in a short time I pulled into O'Reilly Auto Parts
parking lot with around 9 other VW's. I didn't have any problem finding
the place, and seen quite a few really nice VW's. One of those was the
guy that was holding the event, Mark Alley, and he has one really nice
1960 Bug. I did see Jimmy Jarrett there , and Steve French was there
too. I did get there about a hour after the event started, and most of
the other's had already left earlier, but I did have a nice chat with
Mark. He told me that he had went to the Break The Record Night with 8
VW's, and has been going to our event for the last couple of years. He
really enjoys our annual event too! There was one other Sandrail that
pulled in later than me, and this set the VW count at 26 VW's. Not too
bad huh! Mark said the count was a little lower that their last event ,
but that's still a good count.
He is also talking about doing a Parkway Cruise this year and wondered
if the GOV would be having one this year, to which I told him it sure
would be nice. A lot of our GOV member's look forward to our Parkway
Cruise, myself included, and have been missing this annual event. I hope
that we will revive the event this year! If we will do that, we can have
the Collinsville guy's join us for what may be the largest group yet.
Wouldn't that be great. The last one we had was with 15 VW's cruising
the Parkway, with a great picnic style lunch, and some great picture
taking opportunities. That was the year before last.....2 year's ago.
Hey GOV, let's do it again this year!
Anyway, I hope to see you guy's again soon. I'm planning on making the
Farmington show, and looking forward to seeing my GOV friend's again.
So, till then my
friends....................................................................
Have a VW day,
Bobby

Hello Good Ole Volks,
We had an interesting event to occur in my hometown of Danville, VA this
past Saturday. This was something that has never happened before as far
as I know. This was of such an importance, that I cranked up my
Squareback, and drove it around to the few yardsale's that Susan & I
went to on this day. As fate would have it, my Squareback wasn't wanting
to act right, so I went back home to park it till I could get the
situation resolved, and got the pickup. This event just happened to be
the first GOV cruise of the year, and they were cruising to the AAF Tank
Museum in Danville, VA!
We knew that the GOV was leaving Herbies Place at 9:00AM, and was
supposed to arrive at the Tank Museum at 10:00AM, so we drove out to the
NC Welcome Center to wait for them to pass, so we could fall in with
them on their way to the museum. After waiting till 10:20AM without
seeing any VW's, I figured that we may have missed them in transition,
and we headed on to the museum to make sure that we hadn't missed them.
When we arrived at the Tank Museum and pulled on into the parking lot,
there was a group of 5 VW's in the lower parking lot that I didn't
recognize. These were some guy's from the Bugz In The Burg VW Club in
Lynchburg, VA. When I asked them about how they knew about this great
event, they all chimed in together, "from April", as in our own April
Dye. These guy's were.....Dan in his purple Bug, Billy & son in his Dune
Buggy, George in his yellow convertible Bug, Jimmy in his blue Bug, and
also a blue Ghia that I'm not sure who drive's. After meeting these new
VW driver's and chatting awhile, here came our GOV member's. Leading the
pack was April in her orange Thing, along with Billy, Daniel,& Matt,
Jack & Deb in their white Bug, Chan & Kim in his blue Bug, a nice red
Bug, a light blue Bug, another blue Bug, and then a white Bug, Kristy
and Jon in their silver New Beetle, and a very nice blue & white Bus
Camper. And then there was Lee & Sheari, and Billy in the support
vehicle's. After everyone got out of their vehicle's to get a good
stretch, we joined them for a parking lot meet & greet to catch up some
before they headed to the Tank Museum to check thing's out. Now, since I
had to show up at work, and I had been to the Tank Museum for the annual
carshow they put on every year for the last 2 year's, we didn't
participate in the tour with the rest of the GOV. But, I'm here to tell
you..........this place is huge, and it is filled with all kinds of
interesting thing's other than just tank's. Just talk to our member's
that did go, and they will tell you all about it,
Several hour's later, after the GOV had walked all over the Tank Museum
to check out the tank's, rocket's machine gun's, etc...........hunger
set in, and you know what happens then! Someone had suggested the
restaurant Ryans, which is a buffet style place, but then certain one's
that had eaten there before didn't like that idea, so when I talked to
Billy over the phone about an eating place, Marys Diner was suggested.
This restaurant has been around since the 1950's, and I personally have
been eating at this place since I was 8 year's old. I went to the
restaurant and made the arrangment's for our group with the floor staff.
Can you imagine their delight when I told them that I was bringing them
a group of 23 hungry people to eat.......especially when there wasn't
many there! Well......Susan & me waited for the group to arrive, and
then joined the line of GOV to taste some of the local cuisine.
Everybody seemed to enjoy the food and several made comment's about how
much they liked the place. If you ever pass through Danville, VA, and
are looking for some good family cooking, I suggest checking out Marys
Diner. I've never known anybody to complain!
After everyone finished eating, we headed back out to the parking lot,
and the heat, for another short parking lot gathering, before everyone
went their separate ways. Several people that I knew seen the VW's at
the restaurant, and stopped in to check them out. One of them was a
local policeman that I've known for awhile, and he has a VW camper that
he just finished redoing last year. I have talked to him about the GOV
several times when he came to my office to investigate the copper theft
from our office a/c unit's. That happened twice last year!
There was another guy that I knew that came into Marys Diner after
seeing all of the VW's in the parking lot, and seen me, saying, "I knew
that with all of those VW's here, you had to be around here somewhere!"
I just had another guy to ask me yesterday if I was part of that group
of VW's out at the Tank Museum. I just smiled and said yes! Like I said
at the start of this report........... this doesn't happen a lot in
Danville. But, it did happen this past Saturday, and I had the pleasure
of being part of it. The member's that did join this cruise seemed to
enjoy themselves, and we had another VW club to participate too. There
was a total of 14 VW's and 23 people that had some fun in Danville,VA,
and I hope that they will do it again.
OK.......the next event is going to be the "Knox Volks Summer Jam" in
Knoxville, Tennessee on July 25,2009! And then there is the "GOV Break
The Record Night" on August 13,2009. We didn't quite break the record
last year, but we can do better this year and even the member's of the
Bugz In The Burg are talking about helping us to make this happen. So
talk to all of the VW driver's that you know of, and have them talk to
all of the VW driver's that they know of, and let's make sure that we
break the record this year in a big way. Till
later.............................................................................
Have a VW day,
Bobby

Hello Good Ole Volks,
I hope that everyone is doing alright these days. As I’m sure you
already know, we are having our first GOV cruise of the year this coming
Saturday. We will be cruising to the AAF Tank Museum in Danville, VA.
Susan & me are planning on meeting up with the group as they come into
Danville, and we will be cruising on to the Tank Museum with them. I
look forward to having our club come to my own hometown. I myself have
been to the Tank museum by participating in their annual car show for
the last couple of years and have had the fortune to be able to check
out the tanks, machine guns, rocket launchers, etc. that is on display
at this huge facility. There is just so much to see at this place, so be
ready to see something that you don’t see every day. After we leave the
museum, we will be heading to one of the local restaurants to grab a
bite to eat before heading back home.
Also…..for your info! This coming Friday, June 19,2009, will be the 14th
annual “Drive Your VW To Work Day”, so I hope that you will help me and
all others in driving you VW to work. I know that I will be driving my
Squareback to do my part.
This coming Sunday will be Father’s Day, and I would like to wish all of
the GOV father’s a Happy Fathers Day! Till later………………………………………
Have a VW day,
Bobby

Hello Good Ole Volks,
I hope that every one of our member's had a Merry Christmas, and an even
greater Happy New Year. I know that our's went as well as it could have,
and we are looking for it to be an interesting New Year too. I had quite a
few thing's to happen this year, like having my Dad to pass away, having
to try my hand at running the business, AND, we became grandparent's on
December 1,2008! We've only seen picture's of our grandson so far, but his
name is Michael Grant Adams.......he weighed 12lbs.4oz. and was 22 inches
long, with a full head of hair. Yeah, she had herself a "little man" to be
sure!
I am looking forward to the upcoming year, and I hope to meet a lot of our
newest member's. We will be starting off the carshow season this year with
the 3rd Annual Shriner's Volksfest to be held at the Greensboro Coliseum
on Sunday, February 1,2009. And according to Kathy of SEVWA, we are going
to be on the other side of the complex this year. I'm not sure if I will
be entering my Squareback in the show, but I am planning on attending the
event. So until then, bundle up, stay warm and enjoy our New Year!
Have a VW day,
Bobby
