April 'Reports from Ethiopia'

My Mechanical Security Blanket

It is well known that Volkswagens in all shapes and sizes are all over the world but it is not very often that one gets to experience this truth. I recently spent ten days in the beautiful country of Ethiopia. Shortly after arriving I was riding around in the capital city of Addis Ababa and spotted an old friend – a VW BEETLE! I got very excited. I am sure the other people in the car did not understand why I was getting so excited about a Volkswagen. (So many people do not understand the obsession)
The purpose of the trip was to not to gawk at Volkswagens but instead to share with a very remote area of Ethiopia how Jesus has changed my life. This remote area (where there are no cars) was like walking around in a National Geographic magazine!
After several amazing days deep within another culture we began the trek back the capital city. As I rode into town I spotted a THING!

When I first saw it I yelled, "That’s my car, well not exactly but it’s like my car!"

As I was thousands of miles, or kilometers, away from home, America and the everyday conveniences I am used to, seeing these Buses, Beetles, and a likeness of my own VW Thing (named George) made the world and this culture not seem so big after all.
